Baptism/Christening

Baptism (sometimes known as Christening) is an affirmation of the decision to follow the way of Christ. During a baptism water is poured over the head of the person three times “in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit”, signifying the way God comes to us.

The service recalls the baptism of Jesus who himself was baptised in the waters of the River Jordan by his cousin John the Baptist at the start of the years when he began to teach.

In the Scottish Episcopal Church you can be baptised at any age, child or adult, because no one is ever too old or too young to follow Christ.

During a baptismal service promises are made. For those not of age to make their own promises, parents, along with Godparents or sponsors, may offer them on their behalf with the understanding that the child will be brought up within the life of the Church.
